Councilmember Maria del Pilar Avalos is a former dreamer, having arrived as an undocumented child at
the age of 3 from Guadalajara, Jalisco. Councilmember Avalos has resided in the beautiful City of South Gate for over 40 years. She persevered in her educational endeavors and holds two master’s degrees, one in Education with a Multiple Subject Credential, and the second in Counseling in Marriage, Family and Child Therapy. Maria del Pilar Avalos has strong values of public service and faith. Values instilled by her parents and the love of improving the lives of our children, families, seniors and community.
As a teacher, Councilmember Avalos has received Teacher of the Year awards from the Lynwood Rotary Club in 2013 and Lynwood Unified School District in 2015. As Vice-Chair to 63 rd Assembly District for the Los Angeles County Democratic Party, Maria del Pilar Avalos was honored in 2013 as Women of the Year for the 63 rd AD. Prior to being elected to the City Council, Councilmember Avalos was a member of the Community Advisory Committee for several years, where she advocated and allocated funds for youth andsenior programs.
Maria del Pilar Avalos was elected onto the City Council in 2020, where she quickly helped to bring unity to the council by elevating the level of professionalism amongst her colleagues. Councilmember Avalos fulfilled her commitment to the community by improving the infrastructure throughout the city, allocating funding to our public safety programs, collaborating with Community Development to increase housing programs and was the first to advocate and allocate funding for Mental Health to our children, families and seniors of our community. Additionally, she served as mayor during the
city's centennial year.
Councilmember Avalos is a fierce advocate for funding at the state and federal level for our community.
She has been, and will continue to be committed to the needs of OUR community.

Serving others has always been one of my core values. That is why I chose to devote my career to teaching, as well as why I decided to run for public office. I am always looking for ways to improve the quality of life of residents in the communities that I serve. I look forward to continue serving you, and all the residents of South Gate, so that we make this a community that thrives together.
Supporting small businesses is essential to the strength and well being of our local economy and community as a whole. By spending locally we help to keep business booming within your local region. These local businesses help to create and sustain jobs as well as keep the area vibrant. That is why I am committed to advocating for policies that are business friendly, as well as providing our mom and pop businesses with the resources that they need to help them succeed.
We all want what is best for our communities. That is why I believe in having an open door policy with all of the people I serve. I want to hear about what is most important to you. I want to hear about your concerns, priorities, ideas and solutions. Together we can keep pushing our city to the next level.
